After the Wedding: Repurposing/Remaking the Gown

After the Wedding: Repurposing/Remaking the Gown

A wedding dress can be used in a variety of ways after the wedding! Wedding gowns can be donated or sold, or they can be repurposed into cocktail attire or lingerie! The special dress represents so much love and happiness that many brides wish to keep it forever.

You should clean and preserve your gown properly if you plan to repurpose it in the future! The dress is elaborate and delicate, so it can't be washed like any other piece of clothing. You may risk having the dress turn yellow, become permanently wrinkled, or develop mold and mildew if you do not preserve it. Find out how to clean and preserve your wedding dress so you can keep it for as long as possible!

AFTER THE WEDDING

After the wedding, cleaning your wedding dress is extremely important, no matter what you plan to do with it. It is totally up to you whether you preserve it; however, cleaning your gown properly is a must! There is a good chance that you'll have some stains after your wedding, depending on what you used for your cake frosting, champagne, makeup, sweat, or oil. As time goes on, stains will appear even if they're not immediately visible. Immediately after the reception, remove your dress and arrange for it to be cleaned the next day so that you can prepare to preserve it. We encourage you to hang your wedding gown up by the loops inside the dress that are connected to the side seams - avoid hanging it by the shoulder seams, since it can cause sagging and stretching.

PRESERVING THE GOWN

The preservation of a wedding gown is very different from cleaning it because each dress requires a unique treatment plan. It is important to consider your dress' stitching, fabric, and any other details along the hem, such as embroidery or stain. Make sure you avoid storing your worn wedding dress for a long period of time before cleaning it and getting it preserved. Packaging wrapped in plastic emits fumes that can yellow your bridal gown and trap moisture that makes it mildew - yuck!

We recommend that you bring your gown in for cleaning and preservation as soon as possible after the wedding so you can avoid the potential for discoloration and mildew. Store your veil with the dress as well to preserve it!
